Best Food in Lyon: What We Ate in France’s Culinary Capital

Before visiting Lyon, I knew it had a reputation as France’s gastronomic capital, but I honestly wasn’t prepared for just how incredible the food would be. From cozy bouchons serving rich, homey Lyonnaise dishes to elegant Michelin-starred dining experiences, every meal felt like an event.

Spending four days eating the best food in Lyon was one of the highlights of my France trip. But it wasn’t just the food that made Lyon special—it was the atmosphere, the people, and the history behind the city and food.

In this guide, I’m sharing my honest experiences about the best food in Lyon I ate —what I loved, what surprised me, and what I’d do differently next time. Whether you’re planning a trip to Lyon or just daydreaming about your next great meal, I hope this gives you a taste of the magic that makes this city so unforgettable.

Tips for Devouring the Best Food in Lyon

Before diving into the best food in Lyon, here are a few essential tips to make the most of your culinary adventures:

✔ Make Reservations in Advance: Fine dining restaurants and popular bouchons book up quickly. While some bouchons allow for same-day reservations, Michelin-starred spots often require booking at least a week ahead (sometimes even earlier). If there’s a place you really want to try, plan ahead!

✔ Check Restaurant and Market Hours: Many restaurants are closed on Sundays, and some have midday breaks between lunch and dinner service. Be sure to check hours in advance so you don’t find yourself hungry with limited options! This is also something to think about when planning your trip dates.

✔ Try Traditional Lyonnaise Dishes: Lyon is famous for hearty, traditional dishes like Salade Lyonnaise, Quenelle de Brochet, and Meurette Eggs. The best place to try these? A bouchon—a small, family-run eatery unique to Lyon, known for its warm atmosphere, communal seating, and rustic, home-style cooking. These spots are all about rich, indulgent comfort food and are a must-visit for any adventure to Lyon.

✔ Don’t Skip the Wine: Sitting between Beaujolais and the Rhône Valley, Lyon is surrounded by some of France’s best wine regions. Whether you’re enjoying a casual glass at a bouchon or opting for a sommelier’s pairing at a fine dining spot, local wines are an essential part of the experience. The good news? You don’t have to look far to find great wine—it’s everywhere.

Where We Ate the Best Food in Lyon: The Top and Most Overrated Spots

1. Prairial – Michelin-Starred Magic

📍 Recommended for: Fine dining, creative tasting menu, unique experience

Lyon is known for its Michelin-starred restaurants, and we were lucky to snag a reservation at Prairial about a week in advance. This multi-course tasting menu was a perfect blend of elegance, creativity, and seasonal flavors, making for an unforgettable experience.

The Highlights:

  • A beautifully curated tasting menu – Each course felt like an exploration of modern French gastronomy, with an emphasis on fresh, seasonal ingredients and unexpected flavor pairings.
  • A fish-forward menu with reimagined Lyonnaise influences – With Lyon’s proximity to rivers, seafood is a star ingredient, but each dish is presented in a unique and elevated way. If you’re not a fan of fish, I’d recommend letting the staff know in advance so they can adjust accordingly.
  • A sensory experience from start to finish – The meal kicked off with a tableside cocktail, setting the tone for an evening filled with surprise elements and creative plating that kept us engaged with every course.
  • Choosing your own knife – A small but delightful touch—guests are presented with a selection of beautifully crafted knives to use throughout the meal. As someone who loves small, thoughtful details (like picking the perfect coffee mug in the morning), this was a charming and memorable moment.
  • Expertly paired wines – We opted for the wine pairing, and I’m so glad we did. Each selection was carefully chosen to complement and enhance the dishes, creating a seamless progression of flavors throughout the meal.
  • Cozy yet refined ambiance – The space was minimalist yet warm, striking the perfect balance between fine dining elegance and an inviting, relaxed atmosphere. The service was exceptional—attentive but never intrusive.

Would I go back?Absolutely! This was one of the most memorable dining experiences of our trip, and I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a refined, innovative take on Lyonnaise cuisine.

2. Café Comptoir Abel – My Favorite Bouchon in Lyon

📍 Recommended for: Traditional Lyonnaise cuisine, warm ambiance, and a taste of history

Café Comptoir Abel isn’t just one of the most well-known bouchons in Lyon—it’s also steeped in history. According to their website, the restaurant’s roots date back to 1726, when the first restaurant in Lyon was established. And honestly, you can feel that history in every corner. From the wood-paneled interiors to the lively, welcoming atmosphere, it embodies everything you’d want in an authentic bouchon experience.

We visited on a cozy, rainy afternoon, and this was the perfect place to escape the cold and indulge in rich, comforting food.

The Highlights:

  • Ris de Veau aux Morilles à la Crème (10/10—Absolutely Incredible) – This was hands down one of the best dishes I had in Lyon. The ris de veau (sweetbreads) were perfectly cooked, tender on the inside with a delicate crisp on the outside. The creamy morel mushroom sauce was rich, earthy, and luxurious, coating each bite in pure indulgence. Paired with buttery pilaf rice, this dish was comforting, decadent, and an absolute must-try.
  • Terrine du Chef – A house-made terrine made with pork, veal, and chicken liver, served with pickled vegetables, cornichons, and mixed greens. The richness of the terrine was perfectly balanced by the tangy, crunchy pickles, making it an excellent accompaniment to the creamy ris de veau.
  • Salade Lyonnaise – This classic Lyonnaise salad quickly became one of my favorites. Made with crisp greens, warm croutons, crispy lardons (bacon), and a soft poached egg, it had the perfect mix of textures and flavors. Breaking the egg yolk over everything? Chef’s kiss.
  • A True Taste of Lyon’s Culinary History – The ambiance here makes you feel like you’re stepping back in time. With its history dating back centuries, Café Comptoir Abel perfectly embodies the spirit of Lyonnaise cuisine—simple, rustic, and made with care.

Would I go back? Absolutely! This was one of the best bouchon experiences of our trip, and I’d return for the quenelle alone. They were packed when we arrived for lunch, so be sure to call ahead to get a table if you can.

3. Bouchon Les Lyonnais – A Flavorful Welcome to Some of the Best Food in Lyon

📍 Recommended for: Traditional bouchon experience, lively atmosphere, must-try classic Lyonnaise dishes

Bouchon Les Lyonnais was our first stop in Lyon, and honestly, I couldn’t have asked for a better introduction to the city’s incredible food culture. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere was warm, lively, and welcoming—exactly what I had imagined a bouchon to be.

The staff here are fantastic—playful, energetic, and full of personality. They made us feel right at home, joking around, helping us navigate the menu, and setting the tone for what would be an amazing meal. Between the hearty dishes, communal tables, and overall lively energy, this place instantly made me fall in love with Lyon.

The Highlights:

  • Oeufs en Meurette (Poached Eggs in Red Wine Sauce) – My Absolute Favorite Dish! – If you’ve never had oeufs en meurette, this is the place to try it. The eggs were perfectly poached, swimming in a rich, deeply flavorful red wine and shallot sauce, with crusty bread to soak it all up. It was comforting, indulgent, and easily one of the best things I ate in Lyon.
  • Salade Lyonnaise – A Classic Done Right – Crisp greens, warm croutons, crispy lardons (bacon bits), and a soft poached egg on top. The runny yolk coating everything just made it next-level delicious. I had this dish a few times in Lyon, but this version remained one of my favorites.
  • Quenelle de Brochet – A Light & Flavorful Take on a Lyonnaise Classic – This pike fish dumpling was incredibly light and airy, baked in a creamy sauce that was rich without being too heavy. While I later had other quenelles in Lyon, this one stood out for its delicate texture and deep flavor.
  • An Atmosphere That Feels Like Home – The real magic of Bouchon Les Lyonnais is in its energy and hospitality. It’s loud, lively, and full of laughter, with long communal tables that make you feel like you’re sharing a meal with old friends. If you want a bouchon experience that’s not just about the food but also about fun, warmth, and Lyonnaise spirit, this is the place to go.

Would I go again? Absolutely! This was the perfect first meal in Lyon, and I’d return in a heartbeat—especially for the oeufs en meurette!

4. Carmelo – A Playful, Eclectic Italian Escape in Lyon

📍 Recommended for: Italian food, lively atmosphere, fun cocktails, spice lovers

After a few days of indulging in rich Lyonnaise cuisine, we were craving a bit of a break—so we headed to Carmelo, an Italian spot that turned out to be just as much about the experience as it was about the food. This place is huge, with a quirky, eclectic Italian-inspired design that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a maze of hidden rooms and funky decor. It’s one of those restaurants you actually want to wander through and explore—every turn reveals a new nook filled with playful, mismatched decorations.

Their menu rotates monthly, so you won’t find the exact same dishes every time, but if you’re a pasta or pizza lover (and who isn’t), you’re in for a treat.

The Highlights:

  • Trust the Pasta & Pizza – Especially if You Like Spice – We tried a seafood-infused pasta with a slightly spicy tomato sauce and a bold, fiery pizza—both of which packed great flavor and heat. While the menu changes frequently, you can’t go wrong ordering a pasta or pizza, especially if you enjoy a little kick.
  • Cocktail Menu – A Must-Explore Next Time – We were due for a drink break at this point in the trip, but their cocktail menu looked amazing. If I go back, I’d definitely plan to try one.
  • A Massive, Eclectic Space with a Maze-Like Layout – The restaurant itself is a vibe—playful, colorful, and full of quirky Italian decor. There are tons of different rooms and spaces, giving it a fun, almost hidden-gem feel despite being such a large space.
  • Convenient Ordering & Payment – You can actually order and pay from your phone, which makes the whole experience super easy and relaxed—a nice contrast to the traditional sit-down meals we had elsewhere.

Would I go again? Yes! If you’re looking for a break from bouchon-heavy meals but still want a fun, lively restaurant experience, Carmelo is a great choice. Next time, I’d make sure to save room for dessert (their tiramisu looked great).

4. La Laurencin – A Bouchon We’d Skip Next Time

📍 Recommended for: Central location, traditional dishes

La Laurencin was the last bouchon we tried in Lyon, and unfortunately, it just didn’t live up to the others. It wasn’t bad, but compared to the amazing meals we had elsewhere, everything here just felt a little underwhelming—from the food to the atmosphere.

Granted, we did make a funny mistake that may have added to our overall experience. Cameron, thinking he was ordering steak tartare, was instead served a plain, unseasoned hamburger patty—definitely not what he was expecting! Turns out, even with our best efforts to learn a bit of French, we weren’t immune to some classic menu misinterpretations. Lesson learned: Always double-check what you’re ordering!

The Highlights:

  • Terrine – Just Okay – We had some incredible terrines in Lyon, but this one was forgettable. It lacked the depth and seasoning that made the others so good, and the accompaniments didn’t do much to elevate it.
  • Salade Lyonnaise – A Sub-Par Version – After having some amazing Salade Lyonnaises elsewhere, this one just felt flat. The poached egg wasn’t quite right, the bacon lacked crispiness, and overall, it didn’t have that perfect balance of flavors and textures that makes this dish so good.
  • A Funny Ordering Mishap – Cameron’s attempt at steak tartare ended in a bland, cooked hamburger patty arriving at our table. Not quite the French delicacy we were expecting, but at least it gave us a good laugh!
  • Centrally Located but Better Options Nearby – The best thing about La Laurencin is that it’s conveniently located, making it an easy stop if you’re wandering around Vieux Lyon. But with so many great bouchons nearby, I’d recommend going elsewhere instead.

Would I go again? Probably not. While it wasn’t a disaster, it just didn’t compare to the other incredible bouchons we tried. At least we walked away with a funny travel story!

What We Drank: Bars and Pubs in Lyon

Lyon isn’t just about food—the drinks are worth exploring too! Whether you’re craving a cozy pub for a rainy day retreat, a lively people-watching spot, or a cocktail bar with creative twists, Lyon has plenty to offer. Here are a few spots we loved:

James Beer House – A Cozy Sunday Escape

📍 Recommended for: A casual beer spot, cozy atmosphere,  finding an open spot on Sundays

Lyon is a city that really slows down on Sundays, with many bars and restaurants closed. Luckily, we stumbled upon James Beer House, a British-style pub that was open when we needed it most. We were looking for a spot to hide away from the rain for a bit, and this place delivered.

The Highlights:

  • Cozy and relaxed atmosphere – The kind of place where you can unwind with a pint and some snacks, perfect for a low-key break from exploring.
  • Good beer selection – A solid variety of beers, especially for those looking for something other than wine.
  • Perfect for Sundays – If you’re struggling to find a place open on a quiet Sunday in Lyon, this is a great option.

Would I go again? Maybe! It’s not a must-visit, but if you’re in need of a chill, reliable spot on a Sunday in between eating the best food in Lyon, it’s a solid choice.

Trokson in Lyon – A Sunset Drink with a View

📍 Recommended for: A casual drink, sunset people watching

We stumbled upon Trokson while making our way down Montee de la Grande Côte, a beautiful pedestrian street in the Croix-Rousse neighborhood. This was one of my favorite moments of our trip—the kind of unexpected find that makes travel so special.

The Highlights:

  • A perfect pit stop after a walk – If you’re hiking up or down Montee de la Grande Côte, this is a great place to pause, grab a drink, and soak in the surroundings.
  • Amazing people-watching – The street is full of energy, with locals and travelers passing by, and Trokson’s outdoor seating gives you a front-row seat to it all.
  • Great for sunset views – The golden-hour glow over the city made this moment magical—one of those spontaneous travel experiences that just clicks.

Would I go again? Absolutely! The combination of location, atmosphere, and views makes this a must-stop if you’re exploring Croix-Rousse.

Cigale – Creative Cocktails in a Cozy Setting

📍 Recommended for: A relaxed date night or unique cocktails

Cigale is a small cocktail bar with a cozy, intimate atmosphere and an inventive drink menu. It’s the kind of place where you can expect thoughtfully crafted cocktails with unique flavor combinations.

The Highlights:

  • Innovative cocktail menu – Their drinks were well-balanced and creative, a great spot if you’re looking to try something a little different.
  • Cozy ambiance – A great spot for a casual date night or a chill evening with friends.
  • Service was a bit off – While I’d still recommend it, we found the service to be lacking a bit. It may have just been an off night, but if I were returning to Lyon, I’d probably explore other cocktail bars before coming back here.

Would I go again? Maybe. While I enjoyed the drinks, I’d be curious to check out some other cocktail spots in Lyon before returning.

Final Thoughts: Finding the Best Food in Lyon

Lyon absolutely lived up to its reputation as France’s gastronomic capital. Every meal, whether in a tiny bouchon or a Michelin-starred restaurant, felt like an experience—some were mind-blowingly good, others were just okay, but all of them added to the bigger picture of what makes Lyon’s food culture so special.

Beyond just the dishes, what really stood out was the atmosphere, the people, and the way food is woven into the city’s identity. Some places felt like a warm hug (Café Comptoir Abel), some were all about the lively, communal energy (Bouchon Les Lyonnais), and others surprised us in the best way (Carmelo’s wild, eclectic vibes).

If you’re heading to Lyon, come hungry and plan ahead, but also leave room for spontaneity. Some of our best moments were unplanned—stumbling upon a perfect sunset drink spot or finding the coziest pub to escape the rain. Would I go back? In a heartbeat. There are still so many places left to try.
